Crickets tap out their last urgent messages before the sun sets. Chickens go neck and neck, neck and neck, into the stone house.

The sea had been stirred all day by the South wind. On the beach after the storm, fish lay drowning in the air.

D. The local rich man. He paces up and down the harbour in his yachting cap, white ducks, gold-buttoned blazer and malacca cane. He taps objects that offend him with the tip of his cane, encouraging their removal. R. went to tea with him and was offered delicious honey cakes. ‘They are ordered specially from Santorini,’ ho ploosios said. ‘You can’t get them here.’

Walking back through the village, R. went into the baker’s. They said they could make honey cakes for him any time he wanted.

Oddly enough, R. has an air of superiority not unlike D.’s: when speaking of international politics, he never says ‘France’ or ‘Turkey’ but always ‘Paris’ or ‘Ankara’. He likes to give the impression of being an informed circle.
